This is a very quick and effective activity. It is great for Halloween parties when the lights are low and candles flickering. It is also an easy activity to do with children.
You will need
- a set of battery operated candles. the ones that flicker are best. You can get them in the around-a-pound shop for about €2.50 each. Measure the candle for height and circumferance. The ones I use are 10cm, or 4 in high with a circumference of 24cm.
- A deskjet printer and some plain A4 (8.5 x 11cm) general purpose paper.
- Image editing software, such as Photoshop or Paint.
- A ruler, scissors and sticky tape.
Only use battery candles. Do not use real candles, as you will not see the light through the candle shaft, and you could set your house on fire.
To Make the Candles
Find and download images of your favourite horror stars or shapes, such as pumpkins, on the internet. I am using some classic movie monsters.
Take an image and open it with your image editing program of choice. I am using Photoshop.
If the image is in colour, make sure to DESATURATE it so that it is grayscale. In Photoshop it is IMAGE / ADJUSTMENTS / DESATURATE.
Next, you will want to make the black areas as dark as you can, and make the white areas as light as you can.
In photoshop you would click on IMAGE / ADJUSTMENTS / LEVELS. Move the left and right arrows (see below)
You can also posterize the image. IMAGE / ADJUSTMENTS / POSTERIZE. Or use the THRESHOLD feature. IMAGE / ADJUSTMENTS / THRESHOLD.
Adjust the levels until you have something similar to the image below.
An a4 sheet in Ireland is 297 x 210 (US 11 x 8.5cm) Measure the height of your candle and size the image on the centre of the page at the same height as the candle.
Print the sheet of paper in black and white
When you have printed all of your images, place the candle over the image and mark the top and bottom of the candle. It should be around the same height as the print.
Use a ruler to mark through your top and bottom marks, all the way out to the edges of the paper.
Cut along those lines and wrap the image around your candle. Secure with a piece of take.
That’s it. You are done!!! This very quick tutorial is easy to make and very effective.
The candle won’t look like much during the day, but it looks great when the candle is lit and flickering.
NOTE: Only use battery candles. Do not use real candles, as you will not see the light through the candle shaft, and you could set your house on fire.
You can use any images you like. Below I have added my dancing skeletons.
